Baby, It's Cold Outside!

January 7, 2015

Good morning hearty Minnesotans!
As you know, it is very cold outside. This morning it is 105 degrees colder outside than it is on the inside of your body! That's when the wind is not blowing! When the wind is blowing, it feels like 130 degrees colder than the inside of your body! Now, that's cold!!!

Half of the fourth graders will start OLPA testing today. Be thinkers, and do your best! This is simply a tool to show you what the MCAs will be like and a marker to show how much you still need to learn in fourth grade!

Book Talk Tuesday

January 6, 2015

Good morning readers,
Yesterday Kid President talked to us about his new book coming out about how to be more awesome. The fourth grade teachers have made a New Years Resolution and a connection to KP. We are going to be more awesome by reading more and watching less. We are going to have Book Talk Tuesdays on the blog to share with you what we are reading.

Our first feature is the fabulous Mrs. Larson. She is reading ORPHAN TRAIN by Christina Baker Kline.

Hi! This is Mrs. Larson! I'm writing to tell you about an awesome book I read over break. The name of the book is ORPHAN TRAIN. The book is about orphans in the 1920s in New York City. These children were shipped off to the midwest and given away to families. Some children were treated well, but many children were treated poorly by their adopted families. The setting of the book is in NYC, Maine, and Minnesota so I had so many connections to the setting of this book.

One point of view is from an elderly woman reflecting on her life as it began on the orphan train, and the other perspective is from a teenager who is in foster care and has had many different "homes." At first these two characters seem to be opposite, but as the story unfolds it becomes clear that they have so much in common.

My text-to-text connection ~ This book reminds me of a book called HELP. Both books are told from different perspectives

My text-to-self connection ~ I was born on the east coast and now I live in Minnesota so I could visualize all of the places!

My text-to-world connection ~ Children all over the world have different issues to overcome in their childhood. You must persevere and be a survivor. This book reminds me to be optimistic and happy about the future of this country.

Talk to your neighbor about a book that you want to read. I think we should read Kid President's book next. Maybe we could do a book club in February!!

Love,
Mrs. Larson

Re-Month

January 5, 2015

Welcome back to school!
It is the time of year when we reflect on our beginnings and decide the directions we want to go. We call January "Re-Month" because it is a time to review, reflect, and renew. We will all spend time reviewing essential agreements, hopes and dreams, and actions. What commitments can we make to ourselves to make sure the rest of fourth grade is successful?

Have you made New Years Resolutions at home? New Years Resolutions are kind of like Hopes and Dreams. Once you accomplish them, you reflect and renew!

Happy Friday

December 19, 2014

Good morning balanced students,
It has been a busy week of innovations, engineering, and thinking. We've had visitors, assemblies, and even assessments. Phew! You've been working hard!

Today is a day to focus on balance. We really have to be mindful that we are at school, we are students, and we are principled. Yes, it is the last day of school before a very long break, but remember we still are at school today. Be in the moment!

Over break don't forget to read a little, math a little, rest a little, and play a lot!

Be kids. Be safe. Be smart.
Be good. Be nice. Behave.

Science Museum Visit

December 18, 2014

Good Morning,

Today we have a special visit from the Science Museum at 10:30.  Please remember that we all represent LC, so be respectful listeners.  Follow our Essential Agreements.

Think about when you are designing something.  What steps do you need to take? What do you need to do first?  In class you are making paper tables.  How did your group make decisions? How did you work together?  Think about the design process when creating something.

Look at this chart....here are steps Engineers take when designing something.

Wind Energy

December 17, 2014

G'Day Mates,
We've all been thinking a lot about technology and energy. The Central Idea of our Unit of Inquiry is ENERGY COMES IN MANY FORMS AND CAN BE TRANSFORMED TO SOLVE PROBLEMS. What does this mean in our everyday lives?

This afternoon we have a guest from TRADEWINDS that will talk to us about WIND ENERGY. With your class, talk about what you think you already know about wind energy. Also, generate a list of THOUGHTFUL questions you could ask our speaker.

Thoughtful questions will give you more information; they will teach you more; they will make you more knowledgeable.

Trivia questions will give you quick facts that may or may not teach you something.

Happy Hanukkah!

December 16, 2014

Good morning open minded friends,
L'Chaim!

Tonight at sundown, Hanukkah begins. Hanukkah is the Celebration of Lights that Jewish people celebrate every year. For eight days they remember when their ancestors fought for freedom. They escaped slavery and had very little oil to light their lamps. Miraculously, the oil lit their lamps for eight nights until they reached their safety.

Each day of Hanukkah, families light an additional candle on the menorah. By the eighth day, they will have eight lit candles! (the ninth  candle is used to light the others)

What traditions does your family do for the holidays?
