Fraction Action

November 24, 2014

Good morning PYP students,
We are wrapping up our unit on fractions. We've learned about units, parts of wholes, fractions of sets, equivalent fractions, and fractions on a number line. We will celebrate our knowledge with a comp test before moving into decimals.

Two students in Mrs. Applequist's class were inspired by our current math unit. They used their creativity and were risk-takers to share their excitement with you. This is a great example of taking action! When we take action, we reflect, choose, and act. Way to go, Anna Jo and Isabelle!

Fractions on a Number Line

November 21, 2014

Howdy partners,
We've all been working diligently with fractions for the last few weeks. It is nearly time to wrap this up with our 2nd Comp test. It can be exciting to show what we know. Reflect... what do you still need clarification with?

Mrs. Applequist's class has been spending a lot of time putting fractions on number lines. It is amazing to think many fractions (not including mixed numbers or improper fractions) fit somewhere between 0 and 1!

Imagine if we squished each of these colored fraction bars up to the red line. They would all fit, in their own spots somewhere between 0 and 1! Think though... what about equivalent fractions?

Have a fantastic weekend! Be safe and smart!

CLIMB Theater

November 20, 2014

Greetings PYP Students,
Yesterday we had the privilege of having CLIMB Theater visit us. They shared several skits about the importance of empathy. We have all seen empathy at its finest and sometimes at its weakest. Empathy is when you can really imagine what it feels like to be someone else.

Here is a clip from one of my favorite shows, talking about empathy. Can you think of any good read alouds (chapter books OR picture books) that are good examples showing empathy? Let me know, and I will compile a list to share with you all.

4th Grade Teachers

November 19, 2014

Good morning WINsters,
Yesterday we started our fourth WIN switch for math. Surprisingly, several children went to the wrong classrooms. As a team of teachers, we reflected on this and realized, many of YOU still don't know who WE are!

Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Applequist, Mrs. Laliberte, Mrs. McAlpine, Mrs. Larson

Mathematicious!

November 18, 2014

Good morning mathematicians!
The results are in from the last Post WIN test! This was our most successful WIN switch... Way to go! You are working hard on What You Need. The fourth grade teachers are so proud of your commitment to your learning. We can see your brains getting bushier.

Over the long weekend, I found a great video of a young Mr.Fricshmann. His love for all things math started at a young age. With hard work and dedication, he became a teacher to share that love of math!

Enjoy!

More Equal Sharing

November 14, 2014

Happy Friday to all,

Did you do the equal sharing problems with your class the other day?   Here is another problem to work out with your class.  Remember, draw pictures to show your work.

Kyle and Derek have 23 cookies.  If they share the cookies evenly, how many cookies will each person get?

Share your results with your class.

The Weird Number

November 13, 2014

Hello Everyone,
I wanted to share a video with everyone today.   I showed this video to my WIN groups, so some of you will see it twice.
Its a great number mystery about equivalent fractions and rational numbers.

Click on the link below:

After watching the video have a discussion with your class.
Enjoy,

Equal Sharing Problems

November 12, 2014

Hello Fourth Grader Thinkers,

In math you have been talking and learning a lot about fractions.  Read the word problems below with your class.  Think about what you have learned about equal sharing.  Solve the problems and discuss with your class.

1. There are 5 large sandwiches for 16  children to share equally. How much sandwich should each child get? Draw pictures to show your work.

2. There are 4 burritos for 5 children to share. If they each want to have the same amount, how much burrito should each child get?

Veterans Day

November 11, 2014

Good Morning,

Today is a special day; it is Veterans Day. In 1938 legislation dedicated November 11 to be a day to honor those that served in World War I, also known as "Armistice Day."  On June 1, 1954 Congress changed the name to Veterans Day.

Do you know someone that has served in the military?  If not, ask a family member about friends or family that have. What does this day mean to you?  Share with your class what this day means to you and to our country.

Snow!

November 10, 2014

Greetings Fourth Graders,

Well...snow is here! That means it is time to dress appropriately for the weather. Make sure you wear boots, hats, mittens, scarves, and winter coats to school.  You will be going out for recess, and it will be cold.  Stay warm!

Share with your class... what are some things you enjoy about snow? What are some snow activities you like to do with your family and friends?

 Applequist girls!
 Larson girls!

 Isabelle!

 Kayden!

 Lauren!

 Macie!

 Madysen!

Election Day

November 4, 2014

Good day active community members,
Today is Election Day in our country. People all over the United States, in every single state will be voting. This is a "Mid-term Election" which means we are NOT voting for a new president. People in Minnesota will be voting for governor, one senator, state attorney, and local officials for city council and school boards.

Voting is a right we have and absolutely should exercise. Every voice counts. The way to vote is to know what issues are important to you and be knowledgeable on which candidate will try to improve those issues.

If you get the chance to go with your parents when they vote, have them take a picture of you. Send it to your teacher. I would like to make a collage of students at the polls!

Happiness is....

November 3, 2014

Good morning scholars,
November is a month to reflect on the many things we are grateful for. Each one of us has something to be thankful for, and many of us a lot to be thankful for.

The fourth grade team was able to spend time together this weekend, and I tell you what, we are grateful for productive hard working students! You make coming to work fun for us! We are thankful that we teach in a safe school with people that care about people.

Happiness is coming to Lincoln Center to work hard and play hard!
