Making Inferences

April 13, 2016

Hello thinkers!
We've all been busy practicing identifying cause and effect relationships. Our MCA tests are a great example of cause and effect.

We have worked diligently all year long so we are prepared for the MCAs.
The MCAs will be no problem because we are ready!

What are the causes and effects in these two examples? How do you know? What is your signal language?

Annie and Moby are here to give you a great review of cause and effect with reading passages.

Non-Fiction

April 11, 2016

Good morning thinkers!
This week the rest of the third graders will take the reading MCA test. The test is three days long and is really an opportunity to show what you know! You will have several reading passages including fiction, non-fiction, and even poetry! You've all been getting ready for this week for quite a long time now. Remember to have GRIT and do your very best! We are proud of you!

What is the difference between fiction and non-fiction?
Why do most non-fiction authors write non-fiction?
Are there different types of non-fiction?

Annie and Moby are here to share their knowledge with you. Be thinkers! What connections can you make with this Brain Pop and the tests you will be taking this week?

Hello Poets!
Eve Bunting is an American poet that has written meaningful pieces based on her experiences. She also writes short stories and books. Her words paint very colorful images in our heads. While reading this poem, try to visualize what she is sharing with you!

Read with a purpose... while you're reading think...
Why did Ms. Amanda Drake visit the Third Street School?
Why do the students want to meet her?
Pay attention to the line, "We draw a million drawings." Did they really draw a million?
In this poem, what does appreciation mean?
What is the main idea of this poem?

My Special Day at Third Street School
by Eve Bunting

AN AUTHOR’S COMING TO OUR SCHOOL. Our teacher’s so excited. The author wrote and said that she was glad to be invited.

Her name is Miss Amanda Drake. She’s coming on the bus from over on Biloxi Street just to visit us.

First, of course, we read her books . . . every one we’ve got. Then we borrow fourteen more. She’s written quite a lot.

We make a welcome banner that we hang up in the hall. We draw a million drawings just to decorate the wall.

We fold some origami flowers. They’re very hard to do. We pile them in a basket with a note that says “For You.”

We make a list of questions that we’ll ask Amanda Drake. Our teacher says “Don’t ask her, ‘How much money do you make?’

” We squeeze some ice-cold lemonade. We bake a chocolate cake. Our classroom’s looking beautiful for Miss Amanda Drake.

She’s here! She’s here! We’re in a state of great anticipation! We stamp our feet and clap our hands to show appreciation.

Amanda Drake is tall and thin. Her hair is streaked with pink. It doesn’t sound attractive, but it’s nicer than you think.

She talks to us and reads to us and says she loves to write. “I’m working, working every day and sometimes every night.

“Verbs and nouns and adjectives, words that show and tell. My dictionary’s close at hand for words that I can’t spell.

“There’s something that I’d like to share because it’s truly true. It doesn’t seem like work if you are loving what you do.”

If we could invite a poet or author to Lincoln Center, who would you like to invite? Why?

Be good. Be nice. Behave.

Grit

April 7, 2016

Hello!
We've talked a lot about GRIT this year, especially in the last couple weeks. Grit is sticking to something and doing you're very best... even when you feel ready to be done. It is persevering and sticking to it! It is important to have GRIT at school. Sometimes things seem really hard, and giving up seems like the easiest thing to do. Believe it or not, teachers feel that way too sometimes. The thing is, when we don't give up... when we are thinkers and show commitment... we grow and get better! We are better thinkers and better students.

Testing season is the perfect time to think about having grit. Sometimes the testing sessions are long and maybe even difficult. Remind yourself to have GRIT!

time for a rhyme

April 6, 2016

Hello!
One of my very favorite poems from my childhood is "SICK" by Shel Silverstein. It is a silly rhyming poem that describes a girl's sickness which is preventing her from going to school.

Notice that some of the lines rhyme... what is the rhyming pattern? Who is telling this poem? Is there a theme? Last, have you ever pretended to be sick and tried to stay home from school?

Poets (authors that write poems) write to entertain readers. Poems can be serious or silly; they can be about nature or man-made things; poems can really make us think and feel things. If you haven't ever checked out a poetry book, I highly recommend any of Shel Silverstein's books. Think about what Mrs. Spreigl taught you about finding books in the library! Have fun!

Book Talk Tuesday...

April 5, 2016

BTT is on hold for a couple weeks! It will return at the completion of MCAs!

Hello Thinkers!
Have you ever heard the saying, "Figuratively speaking?" Or when someone is talking and says, "... literally!!!" What do those two sayings mean?

We use figurative language to liven up our words. It makes what we are saying or writing more descriptive. Figurative means the words being said or written are really just giving you more details/description. Literal means the words mean exactly what they say.

Practice a little...
It is raining cats and dogs!
It is raining really hard.

I'm so hungry, I could eat a cow!
I'm starving.

The moon is as round as a ball.
It is a full moon.

There are several types of figurative language. Here is a video clip about similes and metaphors. Both similes and metaphors are used to compare things.

Really listen when people are talking to you! Can you find figurative language around you?

Monday ~ MCAs begin!

4 x 4 = 16
4/4/16
April 4, 2016

Hello thinkers!
This week some of our third grade friends will begin the MCA Reading test. The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment is a tool to measure what you have learned in third grade. It is an important measure that helps your teachers too!

Many of us have different feelings about taking tests. Some of us feel excited because we know we're ready! Others might feel a little nervous or scared. And, some of us might not even think twice about it! Believe it or not, how ever you are feeling ~ someone else is feeling exactly the same way! Also, how ever you are feeling about testing ~ all feelings are completely normal.

Things to really think about when taking your test...
1. stay calm
2. really do your best
3 have grit
4. really do your best... even if you're not into it
5. take your time
6. really do your best
